Mood Disorders Q & A

What are mood disorders?

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that affects your emotional and mental state. Children and adults can develop mood disorders, but both may experience different symptoms.

At Uncharted Healthcare, Roseann offers compassionate support for mood disorders and can help you get the proper care you need to overcome emotional challenges and mental health issues.

Are there different types of mood disorders?

There are several different types of mood disorders. The most common mood disorders include:

Major depressive disorder

Major depressive disorder is a mental health condition that causes ongoing sadness, hopelessness, and emptiness for two weeks or more. People who have depression symptoms might experience a loss of interest in things they used to love, anxiety, restlessness, and withdrawal from close friends and family.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder causes fluctuating moods between mania (elation and high energy) and depression (low energy). With this type of mood disorder, you may have neutral periods in between mood changes.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but it causes more severe symptoms. If you have PMDD, you might experience mood changes that occur before you get your period.

Substance-induced mood disorder

A substance use disorder (SUD) can cause a wide range of changes in your moods, including feelings of euphoria, anxiety, and depression. Substance misuse alters the way you think, feel, and act.

What causes a mood disorder?

There may be several factors that contribute to your mood disorder. It may be linked to genetic causes, like an imbalance of brain chemicals or a family history of mood disorders.

Stressful life events may also cause a mood disorder. If you’ve lost a loved one or are battling a serious health issue, it can cause changes in your moods.

What are some signs of a mood disorder?

Symptoms depend on the type of mood disorder you have. However, many people experience symptoms such as:

  • Ongoing sadness or anxiousness
  • Feeling hopeless and empty
  • Having low self-esteem
  • Having trouble concentrating
  • Changes in appetite and sleep
  • An overall decrease in well-being
  • Chronic pain
  • Irritability

With mood disorders, your emotions and feelings are more intense than what others may experience on a normal basis.

What are the treatments for mood disorders?

After reviewing your medical and mental health history, Roseann at Uncharted Healthcare develops a treatment plan with you to address your mood disorder.

Some treatment options for mood disorders may include:

  • Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medicines
  • Mood-stabilizing medications
  • Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
